about

Paradise Lost is an extended play featuring cloud rap instrumentals. Each track is built from a different sample of the fantastic, lush, and intricate Donkey Kong Country soundtrack. Paradise Lost is loosely intended to capture the fruitless and frustrating longing for childhood by framing it from the tainted perspective of adulthood.

Each of the five tracks on this EP is represented by a distinct color that conveys the tone and mood of the track. Each of the five colors is present in the EP cover art in some degree, and each of the five colors is the color of the cover art for each individual track.

Below is an excerpt of an abandoned rap written for the closing track "Time Don't Slow," followed by a brief glimpse at some of the thoughts and feelings I recorded at the time that I was writing this EP.

"Well, time don't slow down.
But like Drake said,
sometimes life forces us to calm down.
I've been in one place too long,
so it's time to move on now.
I have a broken heart,
but it feels more like it's fractured in compound.
We're too afraid to admit it;
we feel like that might be a cop-out.
We don't need all this schooling.
But then again,
who wants to be a dropout?
We're trapped in a moving vehicle,
and the cruise is too fast to hop out."

What do we do, then? Of course. We stay strapped in, and we pray that the airbags still work when we inevitably crash. We're not sure what will happen, though, because there is a strange feeling that pervades us: a feeling that this car has been crashed before -- and not by us. Well, I'll stop with that bull shit before I say something cliche about cliffs. But what is interesting to think about is how a cliff has such a gorgeous view just before its perilous drop to certain death. And if I could put it into words, I guess that's growing up.

We're running toward this gorgeous horizon, and we wind up jumping to certain death.

I am nothing more than the sum of my influences and the product of success. I am divided by an insatiable love and belief and optimism that cannot be subtracted. I consider myself too weird to live but too rare to die. I am in love. I have been in love since I was barely seventeen. I am not sure that I will ever not be in love. But in a way, that is exactly what sustains me. I am a paradox. I believe that contradictions are a form of truth. I find value in a good existential crisis. I am intentionally overbearing so that my friends will know my passion and everyone else will avoid me. I am always in love.

Red is my favorite color, and it always has been. Choosing a favorite color seems arbitrary, though. Even more, I don't always like red over other colors. For instance, I wear a lot of blue. I have blue hats. I think I look best in navy blue. But red is my favorite. I know that I picked it for a reason, and I have to believe in the constancy of that. And I think that goes for most other things in life, as well. Being in love doesn't always mean finding your soulmate -- if you even believe in that sort of thing, anyway. Part of being in love is being able to commit to a given characteristic in another person -- to commit one's self to the idea of another person. Of course, that can be a sticky situation. Existing is less abstract than it seems, and so, the idea of a person might not hold much weight in reality. But what I mean is that it is important to believe in the thing that draws two people together. Often, it is simply serendipity. But there are always deeper, invisible timelines that run along the grid of existence as some sort of projections of the soul. I claim that two lines that intersect once are bound to intersect infinitely many times. If not, then there was never an intersection to begin. Please enjoy. As always, thank you.
